Rick O'Barry is one of my personal heroes.
When I first heard about The Cove, I did not want to watch it. I knew from the moment I heard about it that this was an important movie, but after hearing about it I also knew that I did not want to face the harsh reality of it.
I have since watched it - how could I not, I love the idea of dolphins and whales, marine mammals fascinate and intrigue me, how could I be blind to a movie that lends a voice to our nautical friends (I say friends, but would I stare at my friends in their suffering and do nothing?).
The Cove is brutally brilliant. It's hard not to marriage The Cove and Blackfish together - they speak the same language, they share aspects of the same message, and Rick O'Barry whose efforts are central to The Cove, is an important bridge between the two - even if this fact is not clearly stated, he is a figure who has and does exist and function in both worlds of the issue.
Unlike Blackfish, The Cove was nominated for an Oscar for best documentary, and rightly so it won the Oscar in 2009.
Since I've watched both these movies I make it a point of sharing them with those who have not (just watched both movies again with my cuzzin who had never heard of them, they both still have the same effect on me).
Now I've already stated here that I am not wanting to preach or stand on a pedestal and dictate how or what you should feel about global issues, but my recommendation is that you watch both - they are both extremely well-made, suspenseful movies. If after watching, should you want to get involved visit the official sites and see how you can contribute, every little action helps, do your part.
Thank you Rick O'Barry!
