My fiancé Anabela has never seen this movie, and so I decided to share it with her (knowing how she loves light movies with multiple stories like Love Actually, Valentines Day, New Years Day). This is something I have always done, shown movies I have already seen to other people, and this is how I developed an appreciation of rewatching movies - like a book you reread, there is always something more to see, find and appreciate the second, third, fourth time around, sometimes it's just nice to revisit the worlds.
200 Cigarettes is not a masterpiece, but I sure do enjoy the movie.
Martha Plimpton is hysterical in this movie as a party hostess on the verge of a nervous breakdown. I remember her growing up (The Goonies, Running On Empty etc), and then she disappeared. Suddenly this movie appeared in 1999, and it was awesome to see her again in the trailer (which upon watching the first time, I knew I wanted to see the movie).
There are just alot of funny performances in this movie - a wreck of a human Paul Rudd, a particularly sexy Courtney Love, a hysterically funny accented Christina Ricci, a deliciously annoying Gaby Hoffmann, a very cutesy Kate Hudson, a 70's die hard hip David Chapelle, and more - all their stories running parallel on New Years Eve 1981.
It's a fun movie, and so based on that I recommend it, Anabela recommends it too by the way!
So for some harmless fun, with an awesome soundtrack, lots of smoking and bad fashion, revisit 1981 with 200 Cigarettes.
