What an awesome movie!!!
Let me just say this movie is awesome - as in this movie inspires awe! It's a Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress Academy Award Nominee - and well deserved it sure is.
Best Actress Nominee Sandra Bullock is astounding in this movie, she has some stiff competition from Cate Blanchett, and probably will not win, but damn she is so good in this movie - it is a demanding role, and she has stepped up to the plate. Already an Oscar Winner, and rightfully so (for The Blind Side), the two roles are absolutely 100% polar opposites of each other - and that is just a great testament to an actress who has been considered by many to be a bit of a fluff actress (this is not All About Steve!!!). We sure have come a long way from Speed, and the trajectory of her career has just gone up (defying Gravity, duh!). So my Oscar favorite is Sandra Bullock at this point, but I state this boldly in the knowledge that it is a long shot.
The Best Director nominee for this movie is Alfonso Cuarón (who won the Golden Globe for Best Director, he also just happened to Co-Write, Co-Produce and Co-Edit the project) - it is a superb delivery, he has taken a cast of two, an extra and two voice actors, some awesome special effects (and they really are pretty spectacular, with 99% of the movie set in space with earth breathtakingly beautiful in the distance, as the audience and actors floating above it), and he has crafted a substantial piece of work. Well Done! This is a product to be proud of - I can't wait to sit through the Director's audio commentary (I am that much of a geek)!
Hands Down this movie deserves it's Best Picture nomination, but it will not be a universal choice, I know of a few people who have not enjoyed this movie, Boo to them I say! And that is what it ultimately comes down to, individual tastes... right now as I type my fiancé is enjoying She's All That, FML (and I know a certain 15 year old who consistently is trying to educate me on the cultural relevance of the Twilight Saga)! But sad as it is, and woe to me on this one, there is an audience for these movies, and so they are made, watched and enjoyed - and do not get nominated for Oscars. But there are a huge variety of movies which do get nominated, and I will offer a personal perspective on all of these, and any I watch in between, including this monstrosity currently on my TV, maybe...
So Gravity all the way is my Best Picture choice for 2013, I enjoyed it that much (and I am not alone, with universal acclaim poring in from critics with near perfect scores, even Mr Sci-fi James Cameron himself has hailed the extravaganza as the movie he's been wanting to see) - there are still alot of movies and performances to get through...
