First there was Insidious, brought to us by James Wan, he who was at the helm of Saw and Death Sentence, must see for horror fans.
In an age of an overload
of Horror movie selections, it's great to have something fresh - although very
clearly reminiscent and inspired by some classic landmark horror movies -
particularly for me, Poltergeist comes to mind.
Insidious worked though, fully
satisfying on so many levels and with a great selection of eerie moments of
creepiness and fright to keep us riveted. Dealing with astral projection as
it's medium of channeling the other worldly elements (or The Further as it's referred), the movie is a must see
for horror fans - even with those
moments of easy horror make-up and some ridiculous and cringe-worthy manifestations and representations of evil
(although these do not destruct greatly from the frightful effectiveness of the
movie)...
Horror movies are perfect sequel fodder, enter Insidious: Chapter 2...
Insidious Chapter 2 picks up exactly where the first movie ends off (and let's just do everyone a favour and avoid spoilers - as I already knew what was in store for me because of a stupid spoiler that came without warning).
This sequel plays perfectly into the cliffhanger from the first movie, and answers and integrates itself well into the original (through the use of some well executed cinematic tricks).
I will say this though - recently I reviewed the Guillermo Del Toro horror film Mama, and had somewhat of an issue with the excessive use of special effects - as I often do with modern horror films (sometimes CGI special effects just don't embrace the art of subtlety which their movies could benefit from).
The insidious film series brilliantly seems to avoid CGI special effects as much as is possible, making use of suspense, the power of suggestion and the art of movie make-up - but again their are aspects to the movies which also could better make use of the art of subtlety - that said, there are some extreme edge of your seat, curled up under the blankets, catching that well planned fright, moments.
And of course , while these are not Oscar nominated roles, Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson are terrific in the role of a husband and wife, mother and father up against the worst possible situation - the haunting.
So watch Insidious: Chapter 2, but make sure to watch the Insidious (1) first, hell make a marathon of them, they are great to watch sequentially, crafted perfectly as a continual story...
