Been down a few days, just haven't had the time sadly, gotta make a living!
What a Great Movie!
I knew nothing about this movie when I sat down to watch it, and I mean absolutely nothing - I didn't even recognise any of the names of any of the players (although once in it I did know about 3 of them) - the only thing I knew about this movie as the opening credits began was that it was a Richard Donner film.
We start the journey meeting the tragic character Roary, a few minutes in and you realise just how tragic. After a failed suicide attempt Roary begins his life anew, what do you do when you begin anew, visit the local watering hole Max's. Max's is a bar and also has to be the local hangout of the neighbourhood diabled, including Wings, portrayed by disabled Academy Award Winner Harold Russell, the only man to win to Academy Awards in the same year for the same role (Best Supporting Actor and an Honourary Oscar for "bringing hope and courage to his fellow veterans", having lost his hands while serving).
But it is the friendship Roary strikes with the local limping barman Jerry (played by David Morse in his acting debut) which is the central relationship of the film - It is at it's heart a movie about the meaning of friendship...
With the help of his friends at the bar Jerry's wildest dreams come true, and in the making he forsakes the relationships which used to mean the world to him - As many know, friendship is a tricky road, many a heart has been broken and many a man has been shaped by a friendship gone wrong, but any relationship worth it weight will have it's challenges.
So why am I watching this particular movie, why is it on the list? The answer quite simply is Louise (played by Diana Scarwid in an Academy Award nominated performance), you know this girl (the actress for sure, the character also or some girls just like her), she's the apex of the triangle, the final wedge jammed in between two friends, redefining their worlds. The story that unfolds on screen is a serious, moving, and enjoyable drama, which will have you rooting for the underdogs.
It's brilliant, so good it might just be one of my new favourite movies, and highly recommended (given the understanding that you are going to be watching a movie from 1980) - C'mon, give it a go (if you can find it, damn that was hard)!
Wow, I have alot of unwatched movies from 1980 to get through - it also happens to be the year of one of my favourite Guilty pleasure movies, Private Benjamin, which I am just going to have to watch for the umpteenth time for you readers of this blog - Schucks! Inside Moves is the 1st movie from the 1980 movies to be watched and posted about on this blog, it is the 38th Academy Award Nominated Movie from the list I have watched since Blog commencement.
